AUSTRALIAN VISAS EXPLAINED IN BRIEF

SKILLED VISAS
Your occupation must be on Australia’s national Skilled Occupation List, or one of its State, or Territory Migration Plans. To be eligible you must meet the minimum requirements of being under 50, having a competent level of English, possessing the appropriate qualifications and skills for your occupation and having at least 12 months work experience in the last 24 months. You must also pass the more challenging hurdle of the visa points test, which awards points based on age, work experience, qualifications, English ability and a number of other criteria. Furthermore, a separate skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority (each with their own requirements) must first be obtained before starting the skilled visa process.

In mid-2012 a new invitation only skilled visa system is being introduced whereby candidates will have to initially submit an Expression of Interest. Monthly selection rounds will be held, providing an invitation to lodge a full application to those with the highest points score in their relevant occupation. The vast majority of skilled visas provide immediate permanent residency to the successful applicant and their accompanying family, while others provide a pathway to permanency after an initial period on a provisional visa.

EMPLOYER SPONSORED VISAS
An offer of employment from an Australian business is required as well as a minimum salary level. If a 3 year contract is given then immediate permanent residency can be applied for. Otherwise, a temporary visa is an option, with permanency often available later.
