How does NZ really compare to the UK? We asked Janet for her thoughts on the following factors:
Climate: “When it rains here, it’s heavy but there are less days of rain. It’s hot in the summer and mild in winter and there are plenty of things to do. Winter can seem like it lasts for ages as autumn, winter and early spring are all similar.”
Work/life balance: “The line is more blurred here, work colleagues are friends and you don’t mind answering a few questions when you’re on holiday, as you can take care of personal things – make calls, get a haircut, etcetera – when you’re at work…. As long as the work gets done.”
Property: “There’s a huge variety of houses here – even on the same street! We’ve gone from a one-bedroom flat in
the centre of Edinburgh to a threebedroom villa in Auckland Central.”
Cost of living: “About the same. Some things are cheaper in NZ and some things are more expensive but it balances out.”
Leisure activities: “There are the same kind of things available but the opportunities seem easier to come by here and the better climate make it easier to do things, like going to the beach, hiking, camping, and roller skating down the waterfront!”
