Despite the troubles and having to lose her financial independence for three years, a factor that many people would find hard to cope with, Melissa remains faithful to her adopted homeland, “Even if I had to move for any reason, I think I would leave my heart in Halifax.” An endorsement indeed for anyone thinking of moving to what Canadians call the country’s ‘Ocean Playground’.

Melissa judges five lifestyle factors in Canada compared to The UK:

Climate: “It’s colder (and snowier) in the winter here, but warmer in summer. There are more extremes in temperature!”

Work/life balance: “Well, if you live on one person’s minimum wage like we do then that person seems to spend their every waking hour at work… So it’s hard to judge objectively.”

Property: “We live in a rented apartment. Overall costs seem to be more affordable.”

Cost of living: “Quite high! Tax rates in Nova Scotia are among the highest of any province in the country. That said, the overall cost of living is still slightly lower than in the UK.”

Leisure activities: “I spend a lot of time out walking my dog, socialising with friends and camping and barbecuing in the summer.”
