So will 2012 be any better for those hoping to escape the sinking ship which the UK would appear to be? Well, with the economic situation in the UK not forecast to improve anytime soon, it is still unlikely that people without job offers or a great degree of financial security will be prepared to embark on the emigration process – no matter how disillusioned they may be with life in the UK at present.
The good news, however, is that more emigration opportunities are slowly starting to be offered by the ‘E4’ countries – particularly in Canada and New Zealand – as their economies improve at a faster rate than the UK’s. For example, in response to the release of a research paper which pushed for more skilled labour in the Canadian economy, the Canuck Government has said it will boost the number of skilled visas granted in its 2012 migration intake, while in New Zealand, British tradesmen are being targeted as part of a scheme to rebuild earthquake stricken Christchurch. In Australia, meanwhile, July 2012 will see an overhaul of the country’s current skilled migration system, so it remains to be seen what new opportunities will open up for Brits in the UK’s most popular emigration destination. However, even if 2012 proves not to be the year you manage to realise your dream of emigrating, be patient. Your chance to escape the UK may still come… One day.
Not convinced? Then look no further than Louise Sydes, who in December 2011 left the UK to start a new life in New Zealand at the tender age of 102 – moving to be with her daughter and son-in-law in Auckland. Who knows, The Sun’s famous headline could still come true… Now, where’s that light switch?
